How Do I Ask About Suicide?

How to Help

  1. Express your concern about what you are observing in their behavior with “I am concerned about you, I have noticed _______________”.
  2.  Listen attentively and non-judgmentally.

  3. Reflect what they share and let them know they have been heard.

  4. ASK – the person directly if he or she is having thoughts of killing themselves.
  5. Ask if they have a plan in place to do this.
  6. Let them they are not alone and there are treatments available that can help them with what they are feeling.

  7. Guide them to additional professional help. Call the local crisis line at 970-252-6220 with information, remain calm, and keep yourself safe at all times. Stay with them till crisis resolves or help comes. Other numbers you could call are 911, or 1-800-273-8255, or go with them to the emergency room at local hospital.
